Guy Enriques

Running to Represent District 6 - Hawai'i County Council

Guy Enriques has spent a lifetime serving the people of Hawaiʻi Island through leadership, coaching, community service, and public involvement.

During his two-year term on the Hawaiʻi County Council in 2008, he delivered meaningful results for the district, including an $18.9 million hurricane shelter and gym for Kaʻū, funding for a potable water well in Ocean View, lifeguards at Punaluʻu, and wrote ordinances that kept water free at all County Water Spigots.

Guy had his first taste of politics in high school, where he was elected Ka’u High School Student Body Vice President. He excelled in academics (member of the National Honor Society) and athletically gifted in volleyball and basketball.

His success in basketball landed him a full athletic scholarship at the University of Hawaii-Hilo. While attending college, Guy worked as a Hawaii County Lifeguard, serving as the first lifeguard stationed at his childhood home at Punalu’u Black Sand Beach. When lifeguards were discontinued at Punalu’u, Guy made 3 major life-saving rescues, because he lives, works, had the experience and fortunately happened to be nearby. Due to treacherous wind and waves, helicopter extraction was the only way to return both victim and rescuer to shore on several occasions.

Coach Guy, as many know him, owns and operates the largest Team Volleyball Camps in the Northwest (Oregon/Washington). With nearly 80-100 high school in attendance, the camp will celebrate it’s 40th year as the largest and most successful TEAM Volleyball Camp.

The local boy makes his home at Punalu’u, while his family operates a lei stand on the Black Sand Beach, since the early 1950s. Guy and his wife Julie raised their 5 boys under the counters of the lei stand, just as he grew up under the lei stand in the early 60s. Guy and his family has been long-time stewards of Punalu’u, leading clean-ups, environmental and wildlife protection, signage and much more. (see Punalu’u Stewardship)
